That Greenwald, daughter of former Giants broadcaster Hank Greenwald, has Down syndrome is just a part of the story. What's more interesting indeed is just how much is possible for a person like Kellie. Now 29, she has a boyfriend, has graduated from the College of Marin and held several jobs, regularly cooks for her family, makes funny jokes and is now a published author totaling more accomplishments than many of us "normally" abled can claim at just 29. With interest in "outsider" art on the rise, Kellie's Book couldn't be timed better for an audience primed to enjoy the work of the differently abled and for readers, especially children, to get a smart glimpse into the success and strength of one extraordinary person.

Blue’s Clues: All Kinds of Signs
(vhs)

Hearing-impaired (and Academy Award-winning) actress Marlee Matlin bookends two "Blue's Clues" episodes and gives the tape its theme by teaching Steve some American Sign Language. In the first story--in which Steve and friends attempt to ascertain where a certain blue dog would like to eat her snack--Steve teaches some signs and follows signs of another kind on poster boards. The written signs, of course, lead to the canine's clues, designated by her famous paw print. Blue Scadoo finds Steve jumping into Jane's book and meeting her deaf friend Carly, who tells a story in sign language. In the second episode, Steve tries to figure out where Blue wants to go by using a map the cunning dog has left behind. He eventually jumps into a Candyland-style game, finds Blue with the Gingerbread Girl, and winds up going to the library. Children ages 2 to 5 will enjoy and learn from this 51-minute video.

SENSORY INTEGRATION

Title                                                       Description

The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Integration Dysfunction

(pb)

by Carol Stock Kranowitz,M.A.

The concept of Sensory Integration Dysfuction is difficult to grasp. It sounds like some touchy feely diagnostic fad at first. It's even harder to explain to those around you. This book is an excellent detailed account of what it means, what to look for, what to do to correct it. Through this book we began to find help for our child and it was the first clue of an underlying more serious disorder (in his case, Asperger Syndrome.) Once you understand Sensory Integration Dysfunction you can spot it so easily it's hard to believe you could miss it before. On a playground, in a classroom, at Sunday school I can pick out the kids who have sensory issues in a heartbeat. If teachers were armed with this book they could save themselves, the parents and especially the children so much heartache. Kids would be diagnosed faster and be able to overcome their difficulties. If you have children in your life, please read this book. Knowledge is power.

The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun:

Activities for Kids with Sensory Integration Dysfunction (pb)

by Carol Stock Kranowitz, M.A.

This companion volume to The Out-of-Sync Child presents activities that parents of kids with Sensory Integration Dysfunction can do at home with their child to strengthen their child's abilities-and have some fun together along the way.

Songames for Sensory Integration 2nd Ed._

(booklet and audio cassette)

By Bob Wiz

This is a great tool for teachers, therapists, and parents. I first learned about this when I attended a mini-conference for Early Intervention therapists. I decided to buy this for my son, who has been receiving therapy for gross motor, fine motor, and speech for 3 years. This tape incorporated both the gross motor & speech therapy ideas nicely. I plan to show it to his preschool teacher to see if they would like to borrow it for the classroom. This is also fun for children who do not have any special needs, as it provides a way to get up & play song & movement games. Probably a great gift for a stay-at-home mom!

Raising a Sensory Smart Child-

The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Integration Issues (pb)

by Lindsey Biel, M.A.,OTR/L and Nancy Peske  Raising a Sensory Smart Child is a comprehensive, informative, and practical book for parents. The authors explain sensory integration and sensory integration dysfunction in a way that parents can understand. They then provide very practical, hands-on examples for helping the child at home, in school, and in other settings. This is a must read for all parents who have children with sensory integration issues."

Sensory Secrets- How to Jump Start Learning in Children (pb)

by Catherine Chemin Schneider, O.T.R.

“This book is a great introduction to sensory integration and how our senses effect our learning. As A professional who works with individuals who have sensory difficulties, I feel that this book would be helpful for new teacher trainings, as an introduction to sensory integration, or as a guide to help individuals (such as parents) who do not work in an education or medically based industry that need to gain a better understanding of sensory integration.”

Early Communication Skills for Children with Down Syndrome:

By Libby Kumin.
Written for both parents and professional caretakers, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down Syndrome by Libby Kumin (who has 23 years of experience in working with children with Down syndrome) is very highly recommended as an informational resource by parents, caretakers, teachers, and anyone else charged with the responsibility of dealing with Down Syndrome children. With a focus on speech and language development, through the stage of making 3-word phrases, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down syndrome offers in-depth insight, home communication activities, ways to help one's child learn basic rules of conduct, and much more.
Classroom Language Skills for Children with Down syndrome

(paperback)
By Libby Kumin.
There are instructions for dozens of easy home- and school-based activities, which help children gradually overcome delays and learn the fine motor skills mentioned above. The author suggests ways for parents to incorporate these exercises into as many day-to-day activities as possible, recognizing how impractical it is to constantly be in “therapy” mode with a child. New material includes a chapter on problems with sensory processing for those who are over- or under-responsive to touch, or have unexpected reactions to sound, pain, or other sensations. Being aware of these sensitivities can open pathways to better behavior and responsiveness to therapy. Also new is information about a critical developmental step--determining when a child is ready for preprinting activities. These and many other additions make this the most up-to-date, comprehensive resource on fine motor development for children with Down syndrome.

Rocking and Talking

(music CD)
part of the Kids’ Express Train Set-(Go to:

for instructions on how to use the CDs and to get free materials to use with the CDs)

A KIDS' EXPRESS TRAIN CD for ADULTS? Oh, AND KIDS, TOO, of course! OK, we admit it. We recorded a CD for adults: parents, grandparents, and teachers who LOVE rock and roll songs. You know those songs that rocked our socks off in the 50's, 60's, and 70's and still continue to touch that soulful part of us. Do you remember "ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK " by JIMMY DE KNIGHT and MAX FRIEDMAN, "BAD MOON RISING" by JOHN C. FOGERTY, "ROCKIN’ ROBIN" by JIMMIE THOMAS, or "HELP ME RHONDA" by THE BEACH BOYS? Well, these songs and more are back, but are packaged with Kids' Express Train goals in mind of "enhancing children's speech through music, imitation, and fun.
Imitation Station

(music CD)
part of the Kids’ Express Train Set
(Go to
http://www.expresstrain.org/song_sheets.htm

for instructions on how to use the CDs and to get free materials to use with the CDs)

This CD focuses on imitation at a very basic level including noises, consonant-vowels structures, single words, and simple phrases. All songs contain the phrase, “Your turn” to give children the cue of when to imitate the words. Imitation Station has excellent speech practice for children slightly below or above the single word level. It gives children repetition of words many times during each song. Repetition is the key focus of this CD.
Vocalocomotion (music CD)

part of the Kids’ Express Train Set-Go to
http://www.expresstrain.org/song_sheets.htm
for instructions on how to use the CDs and to get free materials to use with the CDs

This CD is uniquely different from the others as it has no singing. Every song is done with rhythm and instrumental but in a speaking-rap style. It focuses on consonant-vowel imitation, single words, and simple phrases, just as Imitation Station does, but some children may have an easier time practicing word and phrase imitation when it does not involve singing. This CD also includes the phrase, “Your turn” to cue the children when to imitate.
Conversation Station

(music CD)

(part of the Kids’ Express Train Set-(Go to http://www.expresstrain.org/song_sheets.htm

for instructions on how to use the CDs and to get free materials to use with the CDs)

Combines imitation practice with conversation. We eliminated the phrase, “Your turn” from this collection of songs to help children imitate without becoming cue-dependent. The conversation in these songs can be modeled during natural routines. The old favorite, Ring Around the Rosie is included in this CD, but has been re-written (Round We Go) to make it verbally within a child’s ability to sing.

Fine Motor Skills in Children with Down Syndrome:

A Guide for Parents and Professionals 1st ed.

by Maryanne Bruni, BSc OT(C)

Fine Motor Skills in Children with Down Syndrome:

A Guide for Parents and Professionals 2nd ed.

The popular book, Fine Motor Skills for Children with Down Syndrome is now available in an expanded new edition. Written by an occupational therapist who has worked extensively with children with Down syndrome, and is also the mother a teenager with Down syndrome, this book explains the best practices and procedures for helping children master daily living skills for home, school, and an independent future. The author presents a thorough overview of the building blocks of fine motor development and how the characteristics of Down syndrome can impact the acquisition and progression of fine motor skills.

She also explains the building blocks of fine motor development: Stability
Bilateral coordination
Sensation
Dexterity
Early arm and hand control
And covers important daily living skills for home and school: Dressing & grooming
Eating & drinking
Cutting
Grasping a pencil
Preprinting skills
Drawing
Printing
Cursive handwriting
There are instructions for dozens of easy home- and school-based activities, which help children gradually overcome delays and learn the fine motor skills mentioned above. The author suggests ways for parents to incorporate these exercises into as many day-to-day activities as possible, recognizing how impractical it is to constantly be in "therapy" mode with a child.

Down Syndrome: Successful Parenting of Children with Down Syndrome (paperback)

By John F. Unruh, PhD

This book is a "must read" for parents of Down Syndrome children. Having close friends who had a sister with Down Syndrome, I saw the difficulties and the joy of parenting these children. However, I really knew little about it until I read this book. Dr Unruh not only gives a clear description of the causes or biological reasons for this problem in clear laymans terms, but more importantly, he gives a positive uplifting view of how parents can, and, do deal with this problem. Clearly, this is a book written by someone who has a great love for these children and instills a great hope and sense of purpose to parents as well. It is wonderfully done. A very good read. Kudos to Dr Unruh!

While there are many books for parents on raising a child with a disability, this is the first to help them learn from people with disabilities, and to help children face the unique challenges and rewards of growing up with a disability. Reflections from a Different Journey will also encourage and inspire older children and adults with disabilities, other family members, and education and health care professionals who serve these families.

The book profiles some of the children and interweaves Geraldi's reflections on her motivations and rewards in her work, the incredible logistics of tending to her flock (aided by volunteers and live-in staff), and her establishment of the Up with Down Syndrome Foundation. But their attraction is too strong, and soon they're doomed in another way--for neither can avoid falling in love, regardless of the consequences. Only after three years--a thousand tomorrows later--do they realize at what cost their relationship comes. In the end, they must decide if love is worth the ultimate price.

Fiction Sequel to a Thousand Tomorrows

Still aching over his wife's death, Cody Gunner can't bear the thought of also letting go of his brother with Down syndrome, Carl Joseph. Cody wants his brother home, where he will be safe and cared for, not out on his own in a world that Cody knows all too well can be heartless and insecure. So when Carl Joseph's teacher, Elle, begins championing his independence, she finds herself at odds with Cody. But even as these two battle it out, they can't deny the instinctive connection they share, and Cody faces a crisis of the heart. What if Elle is the one woman who can teach Cody that love is still possible? If Cody can let go of his lingering anger, he might just see that sometimes the brightest hope of all lies just beyond the clouds.

Paralleling this story is their mother's ancient bedtime fable of a child prince, banished for his disabilities by an intolerant king, who returns one day to reclaim his throne-- a tale that makes an especially strong impression on Jeremy.

Like the fabled child king he so admires, Jeremy safely returns with his little brother from the quest and, although Santa remains elusive, their lives are forever changed by the experience

In the present, one brother, trying to get free of oppressing debt, falls prey to ruthless men, setting into motion life-threatening events that test their greater-than-blood bond. This leads to a decision that only an epiphany, and courage, can overcome.
